Apple continues to set the bar for portable media players, but iPods still don’t come with a guide to their impressive features. This full-color Missing Manual shows you how to play music, videos, and slideshows, shop the iTunes store, and create and manage your media library. It’s the most comprehensive (and popular) iPod book available.

The important stuff you need to know

  • Fill it up. Load your iPod with music, photos, movies, TV shows, games, and eBooks.
  • Tune into iTunes. Download media from the iTunes store, rip your CDs, and organize your entire media collection.
  • Tackle the Touch. Use the Touch to shoot photos and video, send and receive email and text messages, and make video calls to otheriOS 5 gadgets.
  • Go wireless. Sync your content and surf the Web over the air, using the Touch’s new iOS 5 software.
  • Get moving with the Nano. Track your workouts with the built-in Nike+ sensor; dial in FM radio; and even create slideshows.
  • Master the Shuffle and Classic. Get your Shuffle talking with VoiceOver, and play music, video, and slideshows on your Classic.

  • This review is for the 10th edition and was written in July 2012.

I can't improve much on the excellent review by Hartley J. Jackson, but I can add one bit of information If you don't own an iPod yet and can't decide which model is best for you, buy this book first.

This book covers the differences among the various iPod versions very well. There is an overview of each model in chapter 1, as well as instructions on how to accomplish each task with each specific model. Reading about how each model works will give you a better understanding of how well a particular model will work for YOU.

There is also an entire chapter on iTunes. That chapter describes how to do the various tasks that you will want to use iTunes for. The authors explain how to change a song's file format, how to edit the information that is stored with each song or album, how to add album art to the albums you have added to the iTunes library, and how to do other common and uncommon tasks. They also have extra tidbits of information that may not be obvious to a user, especially a first-time user. They reassure you, for example, that if you delete a song from a playlist the song is not deleted from your computer and can still be accessed in your music library.

I use my iPod Classic mostly for listening to audio books from Audible.com. These files can often be annoying to navigate if you come back to them after using the iPod for music. Depending on the file, it's often time consuming to fast forward to wherever you left off in the story. On page 45 of this book, I read that I can press the center button on my Classic, and then use the click wheel to scroll rapidly through a file. This information was worth the price of the entire book for me.

If you have an iPod, any iPod, you should get this book.
  • I received the book ahead of the estimated date of arrival. I'm very happy with the condition of the book. I loved this book as it s written in a very simple way to understand. I wasted so much money buying books like teach yourself Visually, until I can not
follow their instruction , as there's missing link to their instruction. since I found the Missing Manuals on the Library, instead of
buying other books if I need to, I buy Missing Manual of that book. thanks to all writers of Missing Manuals especially to Mr. David
    Pogue & J.D. Biersdorfer.
  • very informative, even i understood it! it led me step by step on how to buy songs, how to sync, lots of things i'd never heard of.
  • It was helpful for my iPod touch. Now I know some thing that I never new before it helped me a lot. I'm being honest
  • I recommend iPod The Missing Manual, Tenth Edition to get the most out of your iPod and certainly to get the most out of your iPod Touch. I like its friendly conversational writing. Its organization, contents table, and index make it is easy to quickly find the information you want, especially in the Ebook with hyperlinks from the contents to the page.

I enjoyed studying iPod The Missing Manual, Tenth Edition with my iPod or iPod Touch in hand, and found the instructions clear and easy to follow. The way the chunks of information are organized and presented, mostly in a page at a time, makes it easy to explore and absorb. I like the Ebook open on my iPad while I explore with my iPod Touch or iPod. Certainly buy the book if you do not have an iPad or computer or prefer to read a "real book."

Just look at the table of contents! You will be amazed at everything the book covers from music, to apps, to iCloud. It even describes to how to change languages and how to multitask on your Touch. I will practice multitasking until I don't have to stop to recall or look up how to do it.

I have only one suggestion that might improve the book. The instructions for making a genius playlist on the Touch and Nano worked, but the Touch instructions referred me to "playback controls (Chapter 3)." It would have been faster to do if it had referred me to, "playback controls (Multitask on Your Touch in Chapter 3)."

Everything I had a reason to try in the iPod The Missing Manual, Tenth Edition worked including this one

"If an app is stuck onscreen, hold down the Sleep/Wake button until the red "power off" slider appears. Let go of the Sleep/Wake and hold down the home button until the app closes--and you're back home. " I had occasion to use it, and of course like all the other things I tried, it worked.

Enjoy iPod The Missing Manual, Tenth Edition
