“The last chapter in particular is grueling and grotesque…”

The fifth book in Nick van der Leek’s definitive TWO FACE series on Chris Watts does exactly what the title claims it drills deep through the mountain of Discovery Documents.

The fifth narrative not only makes sense of the 1960 pages of discovery, it also integrates the video footage for the first time into a seamless narrative. Missing pieces are found and new insights revealed and contextualized in the most comprehensive assembly of facts and psychological analysis around this puzzling case yet.

The main focus of the narrative is on the three hour FBI interview with Chris Watts on Tuesday night, August 14, and the astonishing follow-up interrogation leading to Watts’ confession the next day.

Drilling Through Discovery does nothing less than uncover Watts’ thought process leading up to the murders.

"Bought and I was going to force myself to spread the reading out over a few days to prolong the enjoyment of the narrative, thinking it can't be as interesting as the other four. Last night I literally could not stop reading it and kept at it until 3 am. I didn't realize how late (or early) it was! Your analysis of the interrogation of Chris with Coder is so interesting! You hooked me again. Thanks to the author."

TWO FACE DRILLING THROUGH DISCOVERY K9 Book 5 eBook Nick van der Leek Reviews

  • Booklet 5 of van der Leek's growing series about Chris Watts' shocking and horrendous murder and disposal of the bodies of his pregnant wife and young daughters adds very little to what is contained in the the discovery documents previously released by the DA's office. Anyone who has read the documents and/or watched the videos of the investigation, will not find anything new in this book. You will know what evidence has not been found, if you have half a brain you will have observed that certain questions were not asked, leads were not followed up on. van der Leek continues his criticism of investigators for these supposed failings, but the fact that they had obtained a confession from Chris Watts and located and recovered the bodies of the victims within just over 48 hours is pretty remarkable and a result of quick and outstanding and interagency investigative work at all levels. Worse most distracting and annoying, the booklet shows some of the downsides of self-publishing and the author's narcissism it clearly has not been edited, or even proof read by the author himself. It is replete with misspellings, missing words, colloquialisms, and sentences that just don't make sense or disappear...somewhere. Obviously van der Leek's goal was to get the book out as quickly as possible (he's now apparently on a self-imposed monthly publication schedule, with Booklet 6 due out...now!). To release such a poorly written product is just lazy, and greedy, in my opinion.

  • I feel that much of these books were guessing. Seems !like you hopped on board to write them as soon as the crime was committed. At that point many things were not known. Many things I disagree with. But hey I'm not a professional either. Yet I would rather wait and read about
    facts.
  • I have been a fan of the author’s work from his books on the Oscar Pistorius trial and on mass killer Henri van Breda. Van der Leek never fails to astonish me, as with this brilliant book in his series on the Chris Watts murders. But what astonishes is not the pacy words and the readability (that’s a given), it’s Van der Leek’s dedication to unravelling a mound of evidence, and his uncanny ability to do the sums, so as to slip deep inside the mind of a killer. If anyone is going to take us closer to the truth, here's the super-sleuth.
  • Having read all of the released discovery, I was anxiously awaiting the release of this book! I read it in about 2 hours and now I'm dying for the next installment. Nick, you have a fan and reader as long as you write because I really enjoy your perspective as a true crime rocket scientist. Amazing work!
  • These books have a few typos, but, I love the way the information is presented.
I’m on book 6, and really disappointed to be on the last one.
If you’re interested in the Chris Watts case... highly recommended.
  • Excellent. Thought provoking of all American family murder. Nick Van Der Leek goes inside the mind of Watts and his transformation from meek father to a monster
  • Van der Leek does a good job on this account of the interviews that cracked Chris Watts. At least his aim is clear and that is an analysis of Watts personality. He tries to get into his brain as far as is possible to figure out how Watts finally came to the point of Murder as a Personal Problem Solution. There is a huge hole, though, just where we were most riveted, and that's the moment we feel let down. Just as Watts concedes that he did murder Sha'nann the narrative quits on us. Van der Leek goes into other details. He says he's going to delve deeper in the next book but we do feel a bit ripped off after hanging in there so long.
The author said s the question is not whether Watts did it or why he did it. This is precisely true. IMO this one is about a desperate, low functioning man who felt intolerably trapped. He had to get out of his situation and vent if it meant life in prison or death. Only a retarded person could think his plan would work.
