A Wharton professor and tech entrepreneur examines how algorithms and artificial intelligence are starting to run every aspect of our lives, and how we can shape the way they impact us

Through the technology embedded in almost every major tech platform and every web-enabled device, algorithms and the artificial intelligence that underlies them make a staggering number of everyday decisions for us, from what products we buy, to where we decide to eat, to how we consume our news, to whom we date, and how we find a job. We've even delegated life-and-death decisions to algorithms--decisions once made by doctors, pilots, and judges. In his new book, Kartik Hosanagar surveys the brave new world of algorithmic decision-making and reveals the potentially dangerous biases they can give rise to as they increasingly run our lives. He makes the compelling case that we need to arm ourselves with a better, deeper, more nuanced understanding of the phenomenon of algorithmic thinking. And he gives us a route in, pointing out that algorithms often think a lot like their creators--that is, like you and me.

Hosanagar draws on his experiences designing algorithms professionally--as well as on history, computer science, and psychology--to explore how algorithms work and why they occasionally go rogue, what drives our trust in them, and the many ramifications of algorithmic decision-making. He examines episodes like Microsoft's chatbot Tay, which was designed to converse on social media like a teenage girl, but instead turned sexist and racist; the fatal accidents of self-driving cars; and even our own common, and often frustrating, experiences on services like Netflix and . A Human's Guide to Machine Intelligence is an entertaining and provocative look at one of the most important developments of our time and a practical user's guide to this first wave of practical artificial intelligence.

"A very easy read that will help everyone get caught up on the state of the art of Artificial Intelligence, how we got here and the path that lies ahead. Through out the book there were anecdotes and examples from history and living memory that were really fun to learn about. The last part of the book was very thought provoking in terms of describing the crossroads we are at with AI as a society and the opportunities that lie ahead!"

  • American inventor Benjamin Franklin was beaten by the first robotic chess playing machine. The machine was invented by Hungarian inventor Wolfgang Kempelen in 1770, and inside its array of clanking gears, levers, pulleys and mechanisms - was intelligence. Which brings me to this important book written by Kartik Hosanagar.

Professor Hosanagar’s book, “A Human’s Guide To Machine Intelligence,” provides an eloquent overview and simplified explanation on the impact algorithms and AI are having on our lives. It’s an important book for a few reasons. As Hosanagar points out, algorithms are already commonly occurring and are having a real impact on many lives, and their applications are dramatically increasing. Already Machine Learning and AI are having a significant influence (currently approximately 33% of purchases on and 80% of recommendations on Netflix are influenced by algorithms) and the applications for Machine Learning and AI are increasing dramatically. The topic in general is all too often ignored by many people as being too complicated or difficult to understand. In his book, Hosanagar successfully educates and informs the reader by demystifying the buzzwords and technology (an algorithm is simply instruction, “like a recipe for an omelette”), and provides insights concerning what new AI applications are coming in the near future. Concurrent with these new tools, he describes suggestions as to how we can best manage them.

As for Benjamin Franklin’s chess loss, it was discovered years later that the chess playing machine was a hoax, and in fact had a concealed human chess master hiding inside the mechanical housing! Read Hosanagar’s book and learn how algorithms are still influenced by humans (although there’s no one physically hiding inside) and how we can stay in control.
  • A very easy read that will help everyone get caught up on the state of the art of Artificial Intelligence, how we got here and the path that lies ahead. • Prof. Hosanagar does a great job at explaining the way algorithms impact our lives today by providing good details into the way the algorithms are designed by companies such as Netflix and Spotify. The first half of the book is a very easy read and paves the way for extremely interesting discussion questions such as what degree of transparency should companies provide to their customers on the algorithms at play as well as a proposal for an Algorithmic Bill of rights, which I personally liked a lot. I finished the book with a set of actionable insights into thinking about implications of these algorithms, both as a customer as well as someone who is involved in creating good experiences in the tech industry. I also liked some of the personal experiences described by Prof. Hosanagar in the book, especially his own research in the space, and through examples of companies he has advised/worked with in the past.

    Highly recommend the book!
  • Until I read this, I hadn’t given a great deal of thought to the impact of algorithms and machine learning on how I navigate my daily live.

The author explores how whether it’s mapping (e.g., using Waze to find the best route), dating (e.g., Match.com), listening to music (e.g., Pandora) entertainment viewing (e.g., Netflix), or scanning social network media updates (e.g., LinkedIn, fakebook), algorithmic suggestions are embedded and pervasive.

The book covers what happens when algorithms fail and offers a framework for solutions. ,

It opens with the fascinating case example of the Microsoft chatbot named XiaoIce that “works” (40 million followers) and is beloved in China (a place where there are many rules on what to not say in social media), while the counterpart Microsoft chatbot named Tay failed spectacularly in the US.

Hosanager doesn’t stop with explaining algorithmic failures but goes on to suggest solutions, including “A Bill of Rights” to address some of the dangers and challenges around algorithms. Some of these are

o 1. Transparency, particularly in socially critical settings
o 2. Human in the Loop
    o 3. Auditing the algorithm

While industry natives may feel they “know this already”, the popular audience for whom this is written will find it eye opening, relatable and thought provoking, as I did.
  • Professor Hosanagar brings a delightful, easy to read style to an incredibly and increasingly important topic that all humans should care deeply about; how to understand the way algorithms influence our life and the implications for our society. It's no wonder the author has received so many teaching awards from one of the most prestigious business schools - he lays down a foundation for how algorithms work in layman's terms in a way that would appeal to both computer scientists and the rest of us who only have the vaguest sense of how software works. He also uses recent and relevant examples from companies like Facebook, and Spotify to show how drastically algorithms can affect us. This book makes it clear that our society is at a cross roads in terms of our need for guiding principles for how to think about, regulate and interact with algorithms and the companies / governments that deploy them.

There couldn't be a more appropriate time for this book to come out, with all the presidential candidates beginning to formulate opinions on big tech - they and we all would do well to read this book in order to understand the base facts and their implications. I highly recommend it and have been telling all my friends who are interested in this topic to read it as well so that we can all have a well informed debate.
