Invincible The Lost Fleet Beyond the Frontier Book 2 Audible Audio Edition Jack Campbell Christian Rummel Audible Studios Books Reviews
- The Lost Fleet Beyond the Frontier Invincible (2012) by Jack Campbell is a good read. The story is told third person past tense from Admiral John (Black Jack) Geary’s point of view. Every time I read the name Black Jack I thought of Black Jack Pershing, a famous American general from the first half of the Twentieth Century. I’ve read a couple of other Campbell books in The Lost Fleet series, Dreadnaught and Guardian. I liked Guardian the best.
The thing I like best about this series is the use of CEO’s and syndicates as the bad guys, too many CEO’s are overpaid. The thing I like least in the series is the use of stimulants (drugs) by the good guys to stay awake instead of getting some sleep.
I lost interest in the series after reading Perilous Shield, which is part of the follow on series The Lost Stars. It felt like a rehash of some of the story material from The Lost Fleet, told from a different point of view, Drakon’s POV instead of Black Jack’s POV. I decided to reread some Robert A. Heinlein instead of reading more of The Lost Stars.
Starship Troopers (1959) (not like the movie) by Robert A. Heinlein is the book that got me started in sci-fi adventures, and has remained one of my top five favorite military science fiction adventure stories for decades. The Forever War (1974) by Joe Haldeman, Armor (1984) by John Steakley, Ender’s Game (1985) by Orson Scott Card and Old Man’s War (2005) by John Scalzi, round out my top five military sci-fi adventure stories.
I haven’t seen any of the movies from the following series, but I did read the first books, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Twilight, Outlander, Fifty Shades of Grey, The Long Earth, Divergent, etc. I sample a lot of first books, but I don’t read many complete series. (Who has that much time?) The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins, and The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) by George Martin are a couple of exceptions. I’ve read both of those series more than once.
If you like any of the above you might also like Taylor Anderson’s Destroyermen series, Andre Norton’s Star Soldiers, Andy Weir’s The Martian, or Frank Herbert’s Dune. Other sci-fi and fantasy authors I like include Douglas Adams, Isaac Asimov, Paolo Bacigalupi, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Earnest Cline, Abe Evergreen, Hugh Howey, Larry Niven, George Orwell, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. - Characterization has often been in short supply in this series as can be expected with so many ship captains being cycled through, but I found this latest effort by Mr. Hemry to finally be hitting his stride. I am beginning to prefer this series to that on David Weber's Honor Harrington saga because Mr. Hemry's improving story-telling skills and exciting story line. Also, Jack is not a superman, just a guy trying to keep his people safe and knowing that some will die no matter how good a job he does.
SPOILERS
For example, Duellos, who as one of Black Jack's key advisors was little more than a stereotype, was revealed to be an actual person with real emotions and concerns. Jane Geary, who in the last few books has been a bit of a whiner ("Oh, woe is me, trying to live up to the family name"), finally had that breakthrough moment with Jack. Great. About time. Also, we get to see that Rionne is not a complete witch, and why she has been acting so testy in the last two books.
END SPOILERS
Oh, yes, and there are aliens. And fighting. And new friends made and old enemies confronted. I love this series and I hope we will continue to see more of the Lost Fleet in the months to come. I am also looking forward to reading the Tarnished Knight series as well. If you like epic space opera, then this is the series for you, but do not start here. The plot is way too convoluted unless you read the series in order, but it is worth the effort. - As an Prime member with Unlimited, I rarely pay for books anymore. This series is not in the Unlimited library, however every book is worth every penny! The audible narration makes it all the better. The characters are interesting, well rounded, and you watch them change and mature throughout the series. The author does an outstanding job of keeping your interest, comes up with a different "bad guy" in every book to keep your interest and weaves it all together seamlessly.
The series keeps you in such suspense that I literally have a hard time putting it down! I listen to the book while doing dishes, driving etc. You really can't go wrong. Highly recommend the series, and recommend you start at the beginning!!
