Food Wars! Vol 1 Shokugeki no Soma Yuto Tsukuda Yuki Morisaki Shun Saeki 9781421572543 Books Reviews

  • Really nice intro to the series. As the first volume, it's primarily focused on just setting up the premise and introducing a few major players, but there's certainly enough of a hook here to encourage further reading. The idea of "shounen battle cooking" at an elite culinary school is novel, but holds up really well over future volumes. Tons of likeable characters, a good sense of humor, and even the occasional practical recipe make this essential for those with interest in shounen manga and cooking, and still highly recommended for everyone else.
  • Food Wars! as the name implies is a manga about youths and even some adults taking the food world by storm by becoming masters of the culinary arts. Shokugekis, the food wars, are the duels that enable them to put something on the line either something tangible or even their pride and livelihood to prove their worth and gain some tangibles. At least as presented here in this volume it is a compelling concept. For a series taking place in a school in JPN it is off to a great start and offers a fairly different take on the little explored cooking type series in the Shonen Jump portfolio.

Quality wise it is one of Viz's better releases as there are no mistakes in the cleaning and redraw department. There is some concern over the choice of translating and redrawing the sound effects to change it from just subtitled text to say STEAM on one page to actually writing in huge letters STEAM over the food. It is one of the more laughable moments in terms of sfx design and one will never forget seeing it or thinking its some sort of subtle in manga ad for the STEAM platform. But in any event its really a minor complaint and one that is just about style so nothing really wrong with it.

In terms of extras the one shot prototype story is included, along with a bonus story, this essentially means the volume covers the first five chapters, has a bonus one shot story, as well as a bonus comic bringing the total page count over 200 pages. Only lacking factor is a color page for the start of the volume like some of their other Shonen Jump Advance titles (Seraph of the End, Tegami Bachi) for example.

Definitely pick this title up though as it offers a new take on the school focused series and is a great alternative to the traditional battle action manga that Shonen Jump is known for (and has gotten stale a bit through the years).
  • This is the first of 29 volumes and so far, it's a pretty funny manga with a bit of sadness in the beginning but things don't stay sad very long as the main guy is sent off to culinary school to get better at his already mad cooking skills. Along the way he meets different characters to challenge him and also make him learn what it means to be a top chef that may be potential for outshining his dad someday. Even though the story is somewhat heartfelt and intense, there are some explicit images to lighten the somewhat serious parts but all in good fun without spoiling it with complete nudity.
  • I originally started with the anime and man I got hooked on it. I've seen the anime over and over again, but this this I decided to try the manga and first volume. Boy I'm glad I did, there's bonus stories that are not shown in the anime and they're really good. I'm glad I got the manga now.
  • For fans of cooking or manga or both, this is an incredible read. Never before has a series based on food been so interesting. Cooks will find the creative recipes inspiring and manga lovers will love the challenges the hero faces. Also it's hilarious how good food can effect some of the people in this series. I would tell you how, but it's really something you have to see for yourself.
  • Get hooked son

I initially watched an episode on Crunchyroll and then remembered seeing this on a scanslation website waybackwhen. So I read all the chapters in one roll.

I'm buying the manga to support the series. Way better quality and extras.

The characters are lovable and memorable. The challenges/arcs are addicting and you just have to read until the end.
  • I love the manga series just as much as I love the anime! Very well done very interesting
  • Food wars is great and inspired me to get better at cooking. These all come with a few recipes from the story. Some doable, some only if you have Japanese connections. Still a very cool bonus
